An increasingly common requirement for many larger government, corporate contracts and tenders is having a certified OHS management system. There are two principle standards in Australia at the moment which companies can choose from.
Below is information about the standards, their differences and the benefits of having an AS 4801 or OHSAS 18001 consultant from our professional team.
What is the difference between OHSAS 18001 (ISO 18001) and AS 4801?
Both OHSAS 18001 (or ISO 18001 as it is sometimes incorrectly referred to) and AS 4801 set out the requirements for an organisation to develop an effective Health and Safety Management System with the goal of an injury and illness free work environment. Our Australia-wide team at ICS offer AS 4801 and ISO OHSAS 18001 consulting services to ensure that your business can develop a system that works for you and meets all necessary requirements.
There are few major differences between the two, however different emphases are evident.
Has a stronger emphasis on health (as opposed to injury) and a stronger focus on legal requirements.
ISO 18001 has more international standing and would be suitable for companies with strong export or international characteristics.
AS/NZS 4801 is the Australian Occupational Health and Safety Standard and is suitable for organisations of all sizes and across all industry types. While primarily an Australian/ New Zealand standard, AS 4801 has also been adopted by many other countries.
Compared to OHSAS 18001, it has a stronger focus on elimination of injury and more specific guidance around reporting and evaluation of hazards, risks and controls.
Which should we choose for certification?
Most companies operating out of Australia/ New Zealand opt for AS 4801 certification, whereas companies with international representation choose OHSAS 18001. However, once the new ISO 45001 standard comes out, this may all be a moot point as these two standards could cease to exist.

Need OHS internal audits or maintenance?
Maintaining and doing internal audits of your OHS management system can be a burden if you are a small business and don’t have anyone internally who is trained in this area. Many businesses also see great benefit in getting a “helicopter view” of their business via some internal audits, risk assessments, site inspections and the like from an external OHS consultant.
Integrated Compliance Solutions can help as little or as much as you need. From conducting 1-2 audits per year to acting as your interim OHS manager and taking care of the lionshare of the work, we have a package to suit your needs.
